Dental implants

What are dental implants?

A Dental Implant is a titanium element that allows us to replace the damaged dental piece. Being pure titanium, it makes it act as if it were the root of the tooth itself, integrating into the bone, since titanium is a biocompatible material. Once the implant is integrated with the bone mass, the crown or dental prosthesis is placed. This treatment previously requires x-rays and intraoral scanning to know the individual situation of each patient and the state of the bone. This treatment is performed with prior local anesthesia, or under light sedation if the patient wishes.

Why are implants necessary?

● Security:

Implants are one of the safest treatments thanks to the material with which they are made, pure titanium, which makes it perfectly integrated into the jawbone. Dental implants make it possible to recover lost teeth.

Implants are one of the treatments with the highest success rates, which is why it is a very safe method to replace a dental piece.

● Aesthetics:

This treatment is often carried out for aesthetics, since when a piece is lost, a visible hole remains. When planning implant placement, aesthetics are highly considered. Said treatment implies an aesthetic improvement of the patient's smile.

● Health:

Failure to place an implant can cause some side effects, by not replacing a tooth it can harm oral health as this causes unnecessary tooth movements, which damages correct chewing or dental extrusion.

Types of dental implants

● Immediate implant after extraction:

An immediate implant is placed in the same session in which the part is removed. This allows the treatment to be shortened by several months by obtaining bone healing and dental implant.

● Immediate loading implant:

In this case, once the Implants are placed, a provisional screwed prosthesis is placed within 12 to 24 hours. Once the osseointegration is assured, the final prosthesis is made. This technique is executed when the patient meets certain qualities to achieve primary stability such as the quantity and quality of the bone.

● Minimally invasive surgery:

This technique is performed through tests with the help of a CT, we use a virtual 3D surgical simulator that allows the patient's mouth to be reproduced. The implant is placed to the millimeter in a perfect way. Thanks to this program we will avoid using the scalpel, since the implants are placed with a template. In this case, the post-operative is magnificent since neither incisions nor stitches are made.

Patients who undergo this surgery achieve a smile in a few days and the pain and inflammation are significantly reduced.

We solve your doubts

Steps to follow to place an implant

First, the implant is introduced under the gum, to avoid possible infections and that it is well sealed, in this process osseointegration will take place, which consists of the union of the implant with the bone. After the placement of an implant, the doctor if necessary will recommend some type of analgesic since the area may be somewhat inflamed, after several days we will go to a review to check that everything is fine.

After 2 to 5 months, depending on the case, when the osseointegration process has taken place correctly, a small incision will be made in the gum, where it will be verified that there have been no previous infections, leaving the implant visible.

Finally, after several weeks, the dental piece will be placed on the implant.

Frequent questions Implants

The absence of teeth has the following consequences:

  • Bone loss (unstimulated bone tends to decrease)
  • Possible displacements and complications at the level of other healthy teeth
  • Decreased chewing function
  • Digestion problems
  • Aesthetic damages and modification of facial expression
  • Speech difficulties

Dental implants allow to alleviate these complications, providing a solution that is not only aesthetic but also functional.

Implant treatment allows:

  • Replace a single tooth
  • Replace multiple teeth
  • Replace all the teeth of a totally empty jaw.

In this case, Implants make it possible to fix a bridge or stabilize a removable prosthesis.

Titanium has established itself as a reference material thanks to its high resistance and its excellent tolerance by the body (biocompatibility). It is very important to know that there are different types of materials and ranges of implants, at the Magmar Dental & Aesthetic Clinic, we use the highest and highest quality range (Straumann), in addition to having the experience of our team, great professionals in Implantology . For such a delicate treatment, it is best to go to clinics like ours, which combine experience and quality in something as "delicate" as implants.

There is no upper age limit. Any elderly person can be a candidate for implant placement, as long as there are no risk factors. Conversely, Implants cannot be placed in patients who are too young (under 18 years old, approximately). It is absolutely imperative that the development of the jaw has been completed.

From the preliminary examination to the placement of the prosthesis, the duration of an implant treatment can range from 2 to 5 months.
The size of the treatment (number of implants, increase in bone mass, etc.) will be what determines its duration.

The surgical phase consists of introducing Dental Implants into the maxillary bone. It is performed under local anesthesia and is painless.
The duration of the intervention ranges from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on its complexity (number and location of implants, available bone volume, etc.).
The doctor makes an incision in the gum and pierces the bone in the place intended for the implant. When the bone volume is not sufficient for implant placement, the possibility of increasing bone mass may be considered. Once the implant is placed, it is closed and the gum is sutured. When healing has occurred (called "osseointegration"), a prosthesis will be attached to the Implant.
